How We Use AI
What automated tools may and may not do on FactFiled.
What AI tools may do
- Transcribe PDFs and scanned documents.
- Produce first-pass summaries of long documents for the editor to work from.
- Extract tables from documents into our tracker format.
- Suggest headline options and copy-editing changes.
- Check translations of non-English source material.
What AI tools may not do
- Publish text that a person has not written or edited.
- Generate quotes, statistics or "analysis" that is not in a document.
- Generate images of real people, places or events.
- Decide what we cover.
Accountability
A named person writes and edits every page, and a named editor is accountable for it. When AI tools assisted with a page, the "How we reported this" box says so.
Automated ingestion
Software watches official feeds (agency recall services, the Federal Register, court dockets, securities filings, state WARN pages and the Visa Bulletin index) and places leads in an editorial queue. Nothing is published from that queue until a person writes the page from the document.
Regulation
This policy is written to meet Google's guidance on AI-assisted content and the transparency duties of the EU AI Act, under which text that has undergone human review and is under a person's editorial responsibility is not required to be labeled as AI-generated. We label anyway when AI assisted.
