How We Use AI
What software does on FactFiled, what it does not, and how every page is checked against its documents and edited by a named editor.
What software does here
Software does the legwork that used to take a newsroom clerk a day: it watches the official feeds (agency recall services, the Federal Register, court dockets, securities filings, state WARN pages and the Visa Bulletin index), pulls the documents, transcribes PDFs, extracts tables into our tracker format and prepares working drafts for the editor. Some of those tools are AI tools.
What software does not do
- Decide what we cover, or publish anything on its own.
- Put a number, date, name or quote on a page that is not in a linked document.
- Write "analysis" that goes beyond what the documents say.
- Generate images of real people, places or events.
Who is accountable
Every page is checked against the documents linked on it and edited by the editor named on the byline before it is published, and that editor is accountable for it. The source card on each page lists the documents; the changelog on each tracker records what changed and when. If a page is wrong, the Corrections policy applies whatever tool touched it first.
Regulation
This policy follows Google's guidance on content produced with the help of automation, which turns on whether a page is accurate, original and useful to the reader, and the EU AI Act's transparency duties, under which text that has undergone human review and sits under a named person's editorial responsibility does not require an AI label.
