FactFiled is a one-editor newsroom with subject reviewers. Every page names the people responsible for it.

Editor

The founding editor checks and edits every page, runs the verification checklist before anything is published, and is the person accountable for corrections. The editor's profile, credentials and contact details are on the author page linked from every byline.

Reviewers

Explainers on the Money & Benefits, Settlements & Refunds and Immigration & Visas desks are checked before publication by a named reviewer, who confirms that every figure, date and rule on the page matches the document it cites. Reviewers are named in the "How we reported this" box on the page they reviewed, with their credentials, and their profiles are on the Masthead. A page is not published as "reviewed" until a named reviewer has signed it off.

FactFiled does not currently have an attorney on its review panel. Pages on the Settlements & Refunds and Immigration & Visas desks describe public documents, court rules and agency procedures; they are not legal advice, every such page says so, and readers with a decision to make are pointed to the official source and, where the page says it, to a lawyer. An attorney reviewer will be added to the panel as the newsroom grows, and the pages will be re-reviewed then.

Where we work

The newsroom operates from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on US Eastern Time for publishing decisions. All dates and deadlines on the site are stated in the reader's terms with the time zone.

How a page is published

Every page starts from a document: a notice, filing, bulletin, court order or dataset published by the agency or court responsible. The editor reads it in full, copies the figures and dates from it rather than from coverage of it, and writes the page against a checklist that asks whether the document is linked, whether every number on the page is in it, whether a second source confirms anything the first leaves open, whether names and codes are exact, whether every claim is attributed, whether dates carry a time zone, and whether the headline says only what the page can support. On the three desks with reviewers, the reviewer reads the page against the same documents before it is published. The checklist result, the writer, the reviewer and the documents are shown on every page under "How we reported this."

How often pages are re-read

Living trackers show a "last verified" time and are re-read on the schedule stated beside it: daily for recalls and the live index, weekly for WARN and settlement lists, monthly for USCIS processing times, and on the event for dates that are announced once a year. Notices are dated pieces and are updated only when the underlying document changes, with the change logged.
