How we work

Editorial Standards

The rules every FactFiled page follows before it is published.

The primary-document rule

Every notice, tracker and explainer is built from an official document: an agency notice, a court filing or order, a securities filing, a WARN notice, a State Department bulletin or an official data release. The document is linked in the Source Card on the page and, where possible, an archived copy is kept.

Numbers come from the document

Every figure on the page is copied from the document itself, not from another outlet. Anything that is not in the document has a second, independent source, and the page says which.

Verification checklist

A page cannot be published until the editor confirms each item:

  1. The primary document is linked and archived.
  2. Every number is copied from the document.
  3. Anything not in the document has a second, independent source.
  4. Legal names, agencies, docket numbers and tickers are exact.
  5. Allegations are attributed; settlements are described as resolving claims without admission unless the order says otherwise.
  6. Deadlines and dates are stated in the reader's terms with the time zone.
  7. The headline promises nothing the body does not deliver.

Expert review

Explainers on the Money & Benefits, Settlements & Refunds and Immigration & Visas desks are reviewed before publication by a person with relevant professional experience, named on the page. Reviews are repeated every six months and the review date is shown.

Headlines

Headlines say what the document says. We do not write "you could get $X" headlines, we do not promise dates or outcomes the document does not state, and we do not use sensational or fear-based framing.

Freshness

Trackers carry a "last verified" time and a dated changelog. Notices that no longer apply are marked expired and link to the current tracker; they are not deleted and their address does not change. Explainers are re-verified every six months.

Separation of news and advertising

Advertising is placed in reserved positions and never inside the Key facts or What to do boxes. Sponsored content and affiliate links are labeled. Advertisers and affiliates have no influence on coverage.
