California WARN notices: the latest filings
The largest layoffs and closures filed with California’s Employment Development Department since July 1, 2026, read from the state’s own WARN report, with the totals behind them.
Last verified · refreshed weekly
California publishes every WARN notice it receives in a spreadsheet the Employment Development Department updates twice a week, and the state's rule reaches further than the federal one: employers of 75 or more must give 60 days' notice of a plant closing, a mass layoff of 50 or more, or a relocation. The current report covers notices processed from July 1 to September 2, 2026: 192 notices affecting 10,304 employees, of which 134 are permanent layoffs and 49 permanent closures. Los Angeles County accounts for 2,033 of the employees, Santa Clara County 1,873, San Mateo 1,071 and Orange 1,027.
The table lists the largest filings in that report by number of employees, with the notice date and the date the layoff or closure takes effect. The prior-year report, covering July 2025 to June 2026, holds about 1,590 notices affecting about 79,500 employees. How WARN notices work explains what the notice must contain and what a worker can claim when it is not given; the WARN notices tracker links every state's listing.

What to do
- Search the state’s spreadsheet for your employer; it is updated on Tuesdays and Thursdays and lists the site address and the effective date. Official link
- File the unemployment claim in the week the job ends; the notice period is paid work, and benefits start after it. Official link
- If no notice was given and the employer was covered, California law provides back pay and benefits for up to 60 days. Official link
Questions readers ask
- How is California’s WARN law different from the federal one?
- It covers employers of 75 or more instead of 100, and it applies to a layoff of 50 or more at a site regardless of what share of the workforce that is, to a closure, and to a relocation of 100 miles or more. The notice period is the same 60 days.
- How often is the state list updated?
- The EDD spreadsheet is updated every Tuesday and Thursday with notices processed since the last update. Each fiscal year’s notices are also kept as a PDF report on the same page.
- Does a WARN notice mean I will lose my job on the effective date?
- It means the employer has told the state and the workers that a layoff or closure of that size is planned for that date. Employers amend and sometimes rescind notices, and the count on the notice is a maximum for the site, not a list of names.
