IRS refund timing: 2026 and 2027 dates
When the filing season opens, when refunds with the earned income or additional child tax credit are released, the deadline, and how long a refund takes, from the IRS’s own announcements.
Last verified · refreshed on-event
The IRS publishes only a few hard dates each filing season: the day it starts accepting returns, the deadline, and the point in February when refunds that include the earned income credit or the additional child tax credit can begin. Everything else, including the widely shared “refund schedule” charts, is an estimate. This page carries the dates the IRS has actually announced, and for the 2027 season it fills in as the announcements come.
The 2026 season, for tax year 2025 returns, is the most recent complete reference: it opened on January 26, 2026 and the deadline was Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Where’s My Refund, explained covers what the tool shows and why some refunds take longer than 21 days.

Questions readers ask
- How long does an IRS refund take?
- The IRS says most refunds are issued within 21 days of an electronically filed return with direct deposit. A paper return, a mailed check or a return that needs review takes longer, and the IRS asks you not to call before 21 days have passed.
- Why is my refund delayed if I claimed the earned income credit or the child tax credit?
- Federal law does not let the IRS release refunds that include the earned income credit or the additional child tax credit before mid-February. In the 2026 season the IRS said most of those refunds would show a status on Where’s My Refund by February 21.
- When does the 2027 filing season open?
- The IRS announces the opening date in January. The 2026 season opened on January 26, 2026, with an April 15 deadline; this page carries the 2027 dates as soon as the IRS publishes them.
