Weekly Brief · Weekly Brief

The Weekly Brief: September 5, 2026

The COLA countdown begins, both H-1B caps are full, the FTC pays out on four cases, and a dresser recall you should act on this weekend.

A short read on what changed this week in the documents, and what it means for the money, safety and status of ordinary households.

The deadline of the week: October 14

The 2027 cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income will be decided by a number published at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the September Consumer Price Index. The Social Security Administration's announcement follows.

The base is already fixed at 317.265, the third-quarter 2025 average. One of the three months that will be measured against it is published: the July 2026 CPI-W stands at 327.104, up 3.4 percent over twelve months. August and September carry equal weight, so nothing is decided yet, and any figure quoted now is an estimate. How the COLA is calculated works the formula through with the agency's own numbers, and the COLA tracker will carry the figure the morning it is announced.

Money going out now

Four Federal Trade Commission refund programs are distributing.

Grubhub is the largest by reach: 640,038 payments totaling more than $23.8 million to drivers misled about earnings and diners locked out of accounts holding gift cards. Amazon Flex drivers are in a third round that has now returned more than $60.6 million in withheld tips, this time reaching people who never cashed the first check. Ring customers are being paid more than $5.4 million over privacy failures the FTC says let employees access customer video and left accounts open to attackers. Former AT&T customers are receiving more than $5.6 million over data throttling on unlimited plans.

None of these require a claim. All of them share one deadline: a refund check must be cashed within 90 days. The FTC refunds tracker lists the programs with the totals and the payment counts.

Immigration: both caps full

US Citizenship and Immigration Services has received enough petitions to reach both H-1B caps for fiscal year 2027, the 65,000 regular cap and the 20,000 advanced-degree exemption. Cap-subject filing for this year is finished; cap-exempt employers, including universities and affiliated non-profits, are unaffected. The next registration window is expected in March 2027.

For green-card filings this month, USCIS accepts the Dates for Filing chart from family-sponsored applicants and the stricter Final Action Dates chart from employment-based applicants. The two decisions are made separately and change month to month, so they are worth checking before filing rather than after. The Visa Bulletin tracker records the current one.

Worth checking at home this weekend

Furniture and sleep products dominate the recall list again. Two dressers were recalled for tip-over risk where they are not anchored to a wall, with a full refund offered after the owner marks and photographs the unit. Adult portable bed rails were recalled for violating the mandatory standard. Several toys were recalled over small parts and water beads, and a portable speaker over a lithium-ion battery fire risk, which carries a specific disposal instruction: not the household trash and not an ordinary battery recycling point.

The live recall index carries the newest items from the FDA, CPSC, NHTSA and the Food Safety and Inspection Service in one list, each linked to the agency notice with the model numbers and lot codes to match.

One number

$202.90. The standard monthly Medicare Part B premium in 2026, deducted from most Social Security payments. It is the reason a cost-of-living increase can feel smaller than the announced percentage: the new premium comes out of the new benefit in the same January. The 2027 figure is announced by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the fall, and the Medicare tracker carries it.

What to do

  1. If you receive Social Security, note October 14; the COLA follows the September CPI that morning. Official link
  2. Check the live recall index against anything in the house bought recently. Official link

How the Social Security COLA is calculated

One formula in the Social Security Act, three months of price data, and a rounding rule decide the raise. Here it is worked through with the real numbers.
