I-485 processing times by field office
Family-based green card adjustment times at every USCIS field office, fastest to slowest, plus the employment-based figures, with the case-inquiry date for each.

Form I-485, the Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, is decided in different places depending on the basis of the application. Family-based cases go to the field office serving the applicant's address, and USCIS publishes a processing time for each of the 90 offices: the months within which it completed 80 percent of the family-based I-485 cases decided there in the previous six months. This page lists every office from the USCIS processing times tool, read on September 6, 2026 with data through July 2026, fastest first.
The spread is wide: the fastest office for family-based I-485 is Burlington VT at 6.5 months, the slowest is San Jose CA at 31.5 months, and the median office is 15.25 months. Employment-based applicants should also check the Visa Bulletin: USCIS cannot approve an adjustment application until a visa number is available for the priority date, and the published times exclude cases held for visa retrogression. - How long does a family-based I-485 take right now?
- The median field office completed 80 percent of family-based I-485 cases within 15.25 months in the data through July 2026, with Burlington VT the fastest at 6.5 months and San Jose CA the slowest at 31.5 months.
- Why is the employment-based I-485 time so different?
- Employment-based cases are not decided office by office in the published data. First, second and third preference cases are reported as one field-office figure, and fourth and fifth preference cases are worked by Service Center Operations. Those figures also exclude cases held for visa retrogression, which is why they can look very different from the family-based rows.
- Does the processing time include waiting for a visa number?
- No. USCIS says the published times exclude adjustment applications held because the priority date is not current. An application that is otherwise complete can wait for the Visa Bulletin for years and never appear in these figures.
