N-400 processing times by field office
How long the citizenship application is taking at each of the 90 USCIS field offices, fastest to slowest, with the receipt date that lets you file a case inquiry.
Last verified · refreshed monthly
Form N-400, the Application for Naturalization, is decided at the USCIS field office that serves your address, and the wait differs from office to office. USCIS publishes a processing time for each one: the number of months within which it completed 80 percent of the N-400 cases decided there in the previous six months. This page lists all 90 offices from the USCIS processing times tool, read on September 6, 2026 with data through July 2026, sorted from the fastest office to the slowest.
The spread is wide: the fastest office for N-400 is Cincinnati OH at 8 months, the slowest is Lawrence MA at 17.5 months, and the median office is 11.5 months. The "inquiry" columns show the stricter 93rd-percentile figure USCIS uses to decide whether it will accept a question about a delayed case, and the receipt date that qualifies today. The figures for every other form are on USCIS processing times: every form and office.

What to do
- Find your office on the receipt notice, then read the row. The months figure covers 80 percent of recent decisions at that office. Official link
- If your receipt date is earlier than the inquiry date in the row, submit a case inquiry; USCIS will not take one before then. Official link
- Moving to another office’s area after filing transfers the case and restarts the queue at the new office; file the address change with USCIS within ten days regardless. Official link
- The A-Number on the receipt notice is the file number USCIS uses; the A-Number explainer shows where it appears if you cannot find it. Official link
Questions readers ask
- Which USCIS field office is the fastest for N-400?
- Cincinnati OH, at 8 months for 80 percent of cases in the data through July 2026. Jurisdiction follows your address, so the figure is useful for expectations rather than for choosing where to file.
- Which office has the longest N-400 wait?
- Lawrence MA, at 17.5 months. The median office is 11.5 months, so the slowest offices are well outside the typical range and their inquiry dates in the table reflect that.
- Can I choose a faster field office?
- No. Jurisdiction follows your home address. A move after filing transfers the case to the new office, and USCIS requires an address change within ten days of moving, so the office cannot be selected for speed.
