When Social Security pays in October 2026
Six payment dates this month, two of them SSI, and a Saturday that moves the 3rd-of-the-month group to Friday. Every date from the Social Security Administration’s 2026 calendar, plus November for planning.
October 2026 has six Social Security payment dates, and two of them are SSI. The dates below are read from the Social Security Administration's 2026 payment calendar, which fixes the whole year in advance; nothing here is a forecast. Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, is a federal holiday, but it does not fall on a payment date and moves nothing.
The dates
- Thursday, October 1: SSI for October.
- Friday, October 2: Social Security for people who have received benefits since before May 1997, and for people who get both SSI and Social Security. The rule pays this group on the 3rd; October 3 is a Saturday, so the payment moves to the business day before.
- Wednesday, October 14: Social Security for people born on the 1st through the 10th.
- Wednesday, October 21: born on the 11th through the 20th.
- Wednesday, October 28: born on the 21st through the 31st.
- Friday, October 30: SSI for November.
Why SSI arrives twice
SSA pays SSI on the 1st of the month, and when the 1st is a Saturday, a Sunday or a federal holiday it pays on the last business day before. November 1, 2026, is a Sunday, so November's payment goes out on Friday, October 30. It is not extra money. It is November's payment arriving two days early, and there is no SSI payment dated in November at all; the next one after October 30 is Tuesday, December 1.
Anyone budgeting by calendar month should treat the October 30 deposit as November's.
The birth-date rule, briefly
For retirement, survivors and disability benefits that began in May 1997 or later, the payment day depends on the birth date of the person whose earnings record the benefit is paid on. The 1st through the 10th are paid on the second Wednesday, the 11th through the 20th on the third, and the 21st through the 31st on the fourth. A spouse or a child paid on a worker's record follows the worker's birth date, not their own. How the payment schedule works covers the exceptions.
The COLA is announced this month and paid in January
The 2027 cost-of-living adjustment is due on October 14, the morning the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the September Consumer Price Index. It changes nothing in October. The new amount applies to benefits for December 2026, which are paid in January 2027, and SSI recipients see it in the payment at the end of December because January 1, 2027, is a holiday. The COLA 2027 tracker carries the arithmetic to date and fills in the figure on the day.
November, for planning
- Tuesday, November 3: the 3rd-of-the-month group.
- Tuesday, November 10: born 1st through 10th. The second Wednesday is November 11, Veterans Day, so the payment moves to the day before.
- Wednesday, November 18: born 11th through 20th.
- Wednesday, November 25: born 21st through 31st.
- SSI: already paid on October 30; nothing in November.
If a payment is missing
SSA asks for three mailing days after the scheduled date before it will trace a payment. After that, the Message Center in a my Social Security account shows what was issued, and the national number is 1-800-772-1213. A payment that needs a "release fee" or a gift card is not a Social Security payment; SSA never charges to send money.
The payment schedule tracker lists every 2026 date by group.
What to do

Questions readers ask
- Why are there two SSI payments in October 2026?
- SSI is paid on the 1st, and when the 1st falls on a weekend or a federal holiday it is paid on the business day before. November 1, 2026, is a Sunday, so November’s SSI payment goes out on Friday, October 30. It is November’s money arriving early; there is no SSI payment in November, and the next one is Tuesday, December 1.
- Does the 2027 COLA change my October payment?
- No. The adjustment announced on October 14 applies to benefits for December 2026, which are paid in January 2027. SSI recipients see it in the payment at the end of December, because January 1 is a holiday.
- Why is my payment on the 3rd instead of a Wednesday?
- People who have received Social Security since before May 1997, and people who get both SSI and Social Security, are paid on the 3rd of the month rather than by birth date. In October 2026 the 3rd is a Saturday, so that group is paid on Friday, October 2.
