Social Security payment schedule 2026 and 2027: SSI and retirement pay dates

When Social Security and SSI payments arrive each month, by birth date, from the SSA payment calendar rules.

Paid on someone else’s work record, as a spouse for example? Use that person’s birth date. Direct deposits arrive on the date shown; mailed checks can take longer, and SSA asks you to wait three mailing days before reporting a missing payment. Dates after 2026 follow SSA’s published rules and are checked against its schedule for each year when it comes out.

Social Security pays on a schedule set by your birth date; SSI pays on the first of the month. Both move earlier when the date falls on a weekend or federal holiday. In October 2026, for example, the payment due on Saturday the 3rd goes out on Friday, October 2; when Social Security pays in October 2026 lists all six dates. The table below is computed from the rules printed in the Social Security Administration's annual payment calendar and the federal holiday calendar published by the Office of Personnel Management; each year's rows are then checked against SSA's own schedule once that PDF is out. If your payment has not arrived, SSA asks you to wait three additional mailing days before contacting them. The amounts change once a year, in January, by the cost-of-living adjustment; the 2027 COLA tracker follows that figure from the July to September inflation data to the October 14 announcement.

How to read the table

  • SSI: Supplemental Security Income, paid on the 1st (or the previous business day).
  • Before May 1997, or SSI plus Social Security: paid on the 3rd (or the previous business day).
  • Birthdays 1st–10th: second Wednesday. 11th–20th: third Wednesday. 21st–31st: fourth Wednesday.

What day does Social Security pay in a given month?
It depends on your birthday. Born on the 1st to the 10th, you are paid on the second Wednesday; the 11th to the 20th, the third Wednesday; the 21st to the 31st, the fourth Wednesday. People who started benefits before May 1997, or who also receive SSI, are paid on the 3rd, and SSI itself is paid on the 1st.
What happens when a payment date falls on a weekend or holiday?
The payment moves to the business day before, never after. When the 1st is a Sunday, SSI arrives on the preceding Friday, which can be in the previous month. The calendar on this page already applies that rule to every date.
My payment did not arrive on the date shown. What should I do?
The Social Security Administration asks you to wait three more mailing days, then check the Message Center in your my Social Security account or call 1-800-772-1213. The date on this page is the day the agency sends the money; a bank can post a deposit a little later.
