Stimulus check claims, checked

Every few weeks a new payment is announced on social media. This page lists the claims as they circulate and what the IRS and Congress have actually published, with the document for each.

Last verified · refreshed continuous

A federal payment to households needs two things before it is real: a law that authorizes it and an IRS announcement of how it is paid. The three Economic Impact Payments of 2020 and 2021 had both, and the IRS’s Economic Impact Payments page records that all three were issued and that the page is now historical. Nothing since has met the test.

This tracker records claims as they spread and what the record shows. A claim is listed when it is circulating widely enough that readers ask about it; the status changes only when a document changes it. How to check a stimulus check claim explains the test in detail and how to recognize the messages that use these claims to steal information.

What to do

  1. Before sharing or acting on a payment claim, look for it in the IRS newsroom; a real payment is announced there with dates and amounts. Official link
  2. Never follow a link in a text or email about a payment; sign in to your IRS online account directly to see what was paid to you. Official link
  3. Report impersonation attempts to the IRS. Official link

Questions readers ask

Is there a fourth stimulus check?
No. Congress authorized three Economic Impact Payments in 2020 and 2021, the IRS says all three have been issued, and no law or IRS announcement creates a fourth. A real payment would appear in the IRS newsroom with amounts and dates.
Can I still claim a missed stimulus payment?
The last route was the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, claimed on a 2021 tax return. The IRS sent automatic payments in early 2025 to about a million people who had filed without claiming it, and the deadline to file a 2021 return has passed.
How do I check what stimulus payments I received?
Sign in to your IRS online account by typing the IRS address yourself; past payment amounts appear under Tax Records. The Get My Payment tool has been retired, and the IRS does not send links to release payments.
