Is a fourth stimulus check coming in 2026?
The claim circulates every few weeks with a dollar amount and a date. There is no law authorizing a fourth federal payment and the IRS has announced none.
Our verdict on the claim
A fourth federal stimulus check is being sent to Americans in 2026.
Circulating on Social video and aggregator posts, recurring through 2026.
The claim reappears every few weeks, usually with a specific amount and a specific date, sometimes attached to a real-looking graphic of a Treasury check. It is not true, and the way to establish that is the same each time.
What the record shows
The Internal Revenue Service ran three Economic Impact Payments, in 2020 and 2021, each created by an act of Congress. The agency's Economic Impact Payments page records the outcome plainly: the IRS has issued all first, second and third payments. The page is marked as historical and no longer updated, which is what the agency does with a program that has ended.
No law authorizes a fourth federal payment, and the IRS has announced none. Its newsroom, where every payment program has been announced with a numbered release, contains nothing of the kind.
The test that settles it
A federal payment to households needs two documents, in order. Congress has to pass a law creating it, because the IRS cannot decide on its own to send money. Then the IRS has to publish how it will be paid: who qualifies, how much, and when the money moves.
Both are public and both are easy to check. If a claimed payment cannot be found in the IRS newsroom, it does not exist. That is true no matter how detailed the claim is, and detail is often the tell: invented programs come with precise amounts and dates because those make them persuasive.
Where the confusion comes from
Three real things get recast as a fourth stimulus.
The first is a genuine but narrow IRS action. In late 2024 the agency said it would send automatic payments to about a million people who had filed a 2021 return without claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit they were owed for the third payment. That was real, it was limited to those filers, and it was completed in early 2025. Posts describing it as a new payment for everyone are wrong on every element.
The second is state programs. Several states have sent their own rebates under state law. Those are real where they exist, they are not federal, and they are checked with that state's revenue department rather than the IRS.
The third is tax credits. A refund that includes the child tax credit or the earned income credit is money from the government, but it arrives on a return you filed, not as a payment sent to everyone.
Why the claim keeps returning
Because it works as bait. The IRS's page on recognizing tax scams describes email and text impersonators whose aim is to get money or personal information, and a promised payment is the most effective opening there is. The message says a payment is waiting and the link asks for a Social Security number and bank details to release it.
Two facts close that door. The IRS never releases a payment through a link, and it retired the Get My Payment tool, which it says on the payments page; the only place to see what you were paid is your own IRS online account, reached by typing the address.
The verdict
False. There is no fourth federal stimulus payment in 2026: no law creating one, and no IRS announcement of one. The stimulus claims tracker records each version of the claim as it circulates with the document that answers it, and how to check a stimulus check claim sets out the two-document test to apply to the next one.
What to do
- Search the IRS newsroom before believing or sharing any payment claim; a real payment is announced there. Official link
- Never follow a link in a text or email about a payment; sign in to your IRS account by typing the address. Official link
- Follow the claims tracker for the versions circulating now. Official link
Questions readers ask
- Has Congress passed a fourth stimulus payment?
- No. The three Economic Impact Payments came from laws passed in 2020 and 2021. No law since then creates a fourth federal payment, and the IRS marks its payments page as historical.
- Where did the $2,000 fourth stimulus claim come from?
- From social posts and videos that attach a dollar amount and a date to a payment that has not been authorized. Specific figures make the claim persuasive, which is why the same posts are used as bait for messages that ask for bank details.
- Will this page change if a payment is authorized?
- Yes. The verdict is based on the law and the IRS record as of the date shown, and both are re-read each time the claim circulates. A real payment would be recorded here the day the IRS announces it.
