Social Security pays about 70 million people, and the date each of them is paid follows a rule rather than a queue. Beneficiaries who started before May 1997, and anyone who also receives Supplemental Security Income, are paid on the 3rd. Everyone else is paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday according to the day of the month they were born.
The amount changes once a year. The cost-of-living adjustment is set by comparing the July, August and September average of the CPI-W against the same three months a year earlier, and it is announced in October to take effect with January payments.
