Two dressers recalled for tip-over
Gizoon and Alanca six-drawer dressers fail the mandatory stability standard for clothing storage units. Both offer refunds, and both are unsafe unless anchored.
Two six-drawer dressers were recalled on the same day for the same reason: they are unstable unless anchored to a wall, and they fail the mandatory stability standard that applies to clothing storage units.
The two recalls
Gizoon six-drawer double dressers, about 4,396 units, sold by Airiva LLC trading as Gizoon Direct of City of Industry, California. They come in white and black, measure roughly 47.3 inches wide, 15.7 deep and 31.5 tall, weigh about 88 pounds, and carry AP47-W or AP47-B on the packaging.
Alanca six-drawer dressers, about 261 units, sold by Nanjing Wu Hai Smart Home Appliance Store. They come in brown and white, and carry WH-DS02-6W or WH-DS02-6GE on the packaging.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission describes the hazard identically for both: the dressers are unstable if they are not anchored to the wall, posing tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in serious injury or death to children. Neither recall reports an injury.
What the STURDY Act changed
Both notices say the dressers violate the mandatory safety standard required by the STURDY Act. That is the significant part. Furniture stability used to be governed by a voluntary industry standard, which meant a dresser could be sold that met nothing at all. The STURDY Act made a stability standard mandatory for clothing storage units, so a unit that fails it is now a violation rather than a disappointment, and the CPSC can act on that alone.
It is why these two recalls exist without an injury behind them, and why more of them keep appearing: enforcement is catching up with a large amount of imported furniture that was never tested against the standard.
The remedy, and the step before it
Both companies offer a full refund, and both use the same claim mechanics: write RECALLED on the dresser in permanent marker, photograph it as the notice specifies, email the photo to the address given, and then dispose of the dresser. Gizoon asks for the marking on the top and all sides; Alanca asks for the top, front and sides with the drawers removed.
Before any of that, the safety step: if the dresser is not anchored, stop using it and put it where children cannot reach it. The hazard is not theoretical and it does not require a child to climb; an open drawer shifts the center of gravity on its own.
Anchor everything else
The general lesson from a tip-over recall is not about the recalled unit. Anchoring kits cost very little and come with most furniture, and an anchored dresser is safe whether or not it meets the standard.
