Rivian recalls 98,828 vehicles over rearview camera
A software notification can block the rearview camera image in reverse. The fix is a free over-the-air update; owner letters are due from November 9.
Rivian Automotive is recalling 98,828 vehicles because a notification can obstruct the rearview camera image while the vehicle is in reverse. The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as campaign 26V597000 and received on September 16, 2026, covers certain 2022 to 2027 R1S, 2022 to 2026 R1T and 2027 R2 vehicles.
What is wrong
NHTSA's summary says the rearview camera image may be obstructed by a notification when the vehicle is in reverse. Because of that, the vehicles do not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, which governs rear visibility. NHTSA states the consequence plainly: an obstructed image reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle and increases the risk of a crash.
The fix
Rivian has released an over-the-air software update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on November 9, 2026, and NHTSA says the affected vehicle identification numbers will be searchable on NHTSA.gov that day. Owners can call Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261; the company's number for the recall is FSAM-1866.
