A food recall reaches the public through one of two agencies. The Food and Drug Administration covers most food, and the Food Safety and Inspection Service covers meat, poultry and processed egg products. Both publish the recalling company’s own announcement, which is where the lot codes, best-by dates and package sizes live.
The identifiers matter more than the product name. A recall covers particular lots produced in a particular window, not every package of that brand, so the only way to know whether the box in your kitchen is included is to match the code printed on it against the notice.
