The Weekly Brief: September 7, 2026

A short read on what changed this week in the documents, and what it means for the money, safety and status of ordinary households.

The date of the week: Friday

The August Consumer Price Index is published at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on Friday, September 11. It is the second of the three months that decide the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income.

Nothing is settled on Friday. The adjustment compares the July, August and September averages against a base already fixed at 317.265, and the three months carry equal weight, so two thirds of the answer will be known and one third will not. The July figure came in at 327.104. Any percentage quoted this weekend is an estimate, including the confident ones. The number itself arrives on October 14, and the COLA tracker carries it the morning it does. How the calculation works shows the formula with the agency's own figures.

Recalls: two large vehicle campaigns, and a berry blend at Walmart

Chrysler filed three campaigns on September 1, and two of them are big. The larger covers 328,381 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Grand Cherokee L models from 2021 to 2023, whose rear coil springs may have been installed incorrectly and can detach from the vehicle while it is moving. Dealers replace the lower spring isolators free, and interim letters warning owners go out before the parts are ready. The second covers 239,131 Ram 1500 pickups from 2025 and 2026 where a radio software fault can stop the rearview camera image appearing, which puts the truck outside the federal standard. That one is fixed over the air or at a dealer, with owner letters from September 24.

A campaign covers particular vehicles by their identification number rather than every car of the model, so the only way to settle whether yours is included is the free VIN lookup. The car recalls tracker was rebuilt this week and now carries every passenger-vehicle campaign filed since July 2, 53 of them covering about 7.2 million vehicles.

In the food aisles, the recall worth acting on is Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend in 10-ounce bags, lot code 6040 01-6, best before February 9, 2028, sold at selected Walmart stores in 16 states. It is an expansion of a frozen blueberry recall over possible E. coli O145 contamination. No illnesses have been linked to it. Walmart will refund it, and the guidance is not to eat it.

Also on the shelf: Foods Alive organic moringa leaf powder over possible salmonella, and two injectable medicines pulled at consumer level, American Regent's epinephrine vials for cracking and leaking and B. Braun's sodium chloride for iron oxide particles. The live recall index carries all of them with the agency notice behind each.

Money: what "no tax on tips" actually is

The phrase has been circulating since the 2025 law passed, and it turns out to have a list attached. Treasury's final regulation, effective from June 12, names 71 occupations whose tips qualify, in eight groups running from food service to transport. Bartenders, tattoo artists, wedding officiants, tutors, home plumbers and digital content creators are on it. Work that is not on it does not qualify, however the money arrives.

The rest of the shape matters as much as the list. It is a deduction on the tax return, not an exemption from tax: Social Security and Medicare still come out of the full amount on payday. Tips cap at $25,000 a year and overtime at $12,500, or $25,000 filing jointly, and only the premium half of time-and-a-half counts as overtime. Both shrink by $100 for every $1,000 of income above $150,000. Both run out after the 2028 return. The full explainer has the occupation list and the arithmetic.

Jobs: the rate held

Unemployment stayed at 4.1 percent in August, with 7.0 million people out of work and payrolls up 162,000. The broader measure, which counts people working part time because they cannot find full-time work, was 7.7 percent. Participation edged up to 61.6 percent but is still half a point below January, which is the part of the picture the headline rate hides: some of the improvement is people leaving the labour force rather than finding work. The rate tracker now carries thirteen months of all four figures. The next reading is October 2.

One layoff filing reached the SEC this week. The Bancorp is cutting 64 filled positions, about 9 percent of its bank's staff, as it stops originating small business loans by the end of the year, at a cost of about $5.6 million. It joins the layoffs tracker.

Immigration: the advisory map, and a bulletin that is late

The State Department rates 228 destinations, and 54 of them now sit at Level 3 or Level 4. Twenty-four are "do not travel". The newest ratings are Macau and Sao Tome and Principe, both issued September 4, after a run of Middle East reissues in late August covering Lebanon, Israel and the West Bank, Iraq, Libya and the Gulf states. The new travel advisories tracker lists all 54 with the date each was issued and the risk indicators behind it.

The October Visa Bulletin has not appeared. It is the document that sets which priority dates can file, it usually lands in the second week of the month, and the October page is updated the day it does.
