Layoffs
Layoffs by company and state from official documents.
A layoff becomes a public document twice. A company that commits to a workforce reduction has to tell the Securities and Exchange Commission within four business days on a Form 8-K under Item 2.05, and an employer covered by the WARN Act has to give 60 days of written notice to the state before a mass layoff or plant closing. This desk reads both, so the figures here come from what employers filed rather than from what they announced.
The two records rarely agree in timing. An 8-K names the percentage and the cost before anyone is told; a WARN notice names the site and the number of people weeks later. Between them they are the closest thing to a factual layoff record the United States produces.
What follows a layoff is on the same pages: what severance is negotiable, how long health coverage lasts and what it costs, how to file for unemployment in your state, and the deadlines that arrive in the first 30 days.
