The Weekly Brief: September 14, 2026

Two of the three COLA months are in, 223,472 F-150s go back over fuel tanks that can come loose, a $103,265 H-1B fee is proposed, and the new car loan interest deduction gets its final rules.

A short read on what changed this week in the documents, and what it means for the money, safety and status of ordinary households.

The date to diary: September 24

Comments close on Thursday, September 24 on a Department of Homeland Security proposal to charge a $103,265 fee on every H-1B petition that counts against the annual cap. It would come on top of the existing fees and separately from the $100,000 payment in last year's proclamation, and universities and research employers, whose petitions are exempt from the cap, would not pay it. It is a proposal: nothing is charged today, and it sets no start date. The full notice has the arithmetic behind the number and how to comment.

The same department proposed on September 11 to end the up-to-60-day grace period that H-1B, L-1, O-1, TN and E-visa workers get after losing a job. Comments on that one run to November 10, and the grace period notice covers who it would reach.

Money: two of three COLA months in, and a car loan deduction with rules

The August Consumer Price Index for urban wage earners and clerical workers came in at 328.481 on Friday. With July's 327.104, the running average for the quarter is 327.793, 3.3 percent above the 317.265 base. That is two thirds of the answer. September's index, published on October 14, settles the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment, and the COLA tracker carries the arithmetic until then.

The IRS published final rules on September 8 for the deduction the 2025 budget law created for car loan interest. It is worth up to $10,000 of interest a year for tax years 2025 through 2028, whether or not you itemize, but only for a new vehicle whose final assembly took place in the United States, bought with a loan taken out after December 31, 2024. It shrinks above $100,000 of modified adjusted gross income, or $200,000 on a joint return, and is gone at $150,000 and $250,000. The explainer covers the VIN check and where it goes on the return.

For anyone budgeting around benefit dates, the Social Security payment schedule now finds your next payment dates from your birthday, and the SNAP payment dates page works out the day for 13 states from each state's own rules.

Recalls: an F-150 fuel tank campaign, and a range that needs its gas shut off

Ford filed four campaigns on September 9, and one is large: 223,472 F-150 pickups from the 2023 to 2027 model years whose fuel tank may be improperly secured, so that it can leak fuel or come loose while the truck is moving. Dealers will inspect the tank straps and replace them as needed, free, and owner letters are due from September 21. A campaign covers particular trucks by VIN, so the free lookup is the way to know. The Ford recalls page now lists 69 campaigns this year.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission's list of September 10 carried two recalls worth acting on at home. About 3,992 AGA and La Cornue dual fuel ranges, sold for $6,000 to $20,000, can leak gas from a missing test port cap; owners are told to shut off the gas supply now and get a free inspection and repair, and can keep using the electric oven in the meantime. And about 31,000 Hero Fire Spray canisters can deteriorate and rupture, which means they may fail in a fire; they go to a household hazardous waste center, not the trash, for a free replacement. The same day brought 2.3 million Ricky Joy Sour Crush candy bottles whose rolling ball can detach and choke a child. The live recall index has all three.

The jalapeno Salmonella outbreak count has not moved since the FDA's August 21 update: 431 people ill in 32 states. The FDA's advisory adds that 203 of the 224 people interviewed had eaten at a Mexican-style restaurant, including Chipotle and QDOBA, both of which changed or stopped using their jalapenos in July. The outbreak tracker has the recalls, and the food recalls list was rebuilt from the FDA's four latest weekly reports.

New on the site: a Hyundai and Genesis recalls page, 18 campaigns this year covering about 1.8 million vehicles, the largest over third-row air bags on 568,576 Palisades.

Settlements: a wave of data breach suits, and the first claim deadlines

The desk counted 69 federal data breach class action complaints filed between August 18 and September 11. Thirteen name IDscan.net, eleven McKesson and nine Apple American Group. A complaint is an allegation, not money: nobody can claim anything until a court approves a settlement, which is often years away, and a site offering a payout on a case filed last week is not a real one. The data breach tracker lists the cases with the stage each has reached.

Where money is available without a receipt, the deadlines are close. The first claim deadline on the no-receipt settlements list is October 20, for the VSL#3 probiotic settlement, followed by Lands' End on October 22, pork on October 29, Bestway pools on October 30 and Dr. Squatch on November 27.

Jobs: two more layoff filings

Two companies filed Item 2.05 reports with the SEC on September 10. CVD Equipment Corporation is reducing its workforce by about half after deciding to stop taking new system orders for its CVD equipment business. Commerce.com committed on September 9 to a plan to align its workforce with its cost structure, at an expected cost of $4.2 million to $8.8 million this quarter. Both are on the layoffs tracker.

For anyone who has lost a job, two state guides went up this week, for California unemployment and Washington unemployment, each with what the state pays and how to file, alongside what COBRA costs and how long it lasts.

One number

  1. The vehicle safety recall campaigns with a public record at NHTSA for 2026 so far, through campaign 26V583000, filed on September 9. A campaign names a model, but it covers particular vehicles, which is why the VIN is the only answer to whether yours is one of them.

What to do

  1. If you drive a 2023 to 2027 F-150, put the VIN into the free lookup; the fuel tank campaign is large enough that plenty of readers are in it.
  2. If you own an AGA or La Cornue dual fuel range or a Hero Fire Spray canister, read the notice today: the range needs its gas supply shut off.
  3. If you bought a new car with a loan in 2025 or 2026, keep the lender’s interest statement and check where the car was assembled before you file.

DHS proposes a $103,265 fee on H-1B cap petitions

A proposed rule would add a $103,265 fee to every cap-subject H-1B petition, on top of existing fees and separate from the $100,000 proclamation payment. Universities and research employers would not pay it. Comments close September 24, 2026.
